Subject: Upgraded MacBook Pro from macOS El Capitan to macOS Big Sur on 20 May 2021 Thu

On 20 May 2021 Thursday, I went to my customer's place. It is a 3-storey bungalow near Bukit Timah, Singapore. My task was to upgrade her MacBook Pro from macOS El Capitan to macOS Big Sur.

Her MacBook Pro had less than 10 GB of free disk space initially. In order to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, you need to have about 44 GB of free disk space.

My first approach is to move all her data from /Users/username to the portable harddisk /Volumes/Portable hard disk. However, I could not free up sufficient disk space.

Next, I tried uninstalling unnecessary macOS apps. This second approach still could not free up sufficient disk space.

Finally, I googled and installed Grand Perspective 2.5.4. This app allowed me to free up sufficient disk space and also allowed me to upgrade her MacBook Pro from macOS El Capitan to macOS Big Sur.

After the macOS upgrade, I configured the Mail app, which allowed her to send and receive emails successfully.
